Pharmaceutical drugs cause more overdoses and more deaths than all of the illegal drugs on the market combined. According to the government’s own statistics, listed on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, deaths relating to pharmaceutical drugs rose to roughly 23,000 last year, which accounts for over half of the total overdose deaths in the country for that time period.

Hundreds of manatees, dolphins and pelicans also died in the wake of the blooms.

Fish in Washington’s Puget Sound are loaded with a cocktail of pharmaceuticals, thanks to human waste. Investigators looked for 150 contaminants and found that 92 of them—61 percent—were present in wastewater effluent, estuary waters, or the fish. The list included antidepressants, antibiotics, painkillers, estrogen-based chemicals, diabetes medicines, insect repellents, caffeine, and even cocaine.
