Waking Dogs has been on Minds.com since 2016.
This experiment in Social networking started the year before with a bold criticism of the model of social media that mines social interaction for data, and leads thought with algorithmic precision to benefit advertisers and investors.
A Minds account is a channel- in the familiar social media style which can be what ever you like, from a personal "wall" to a platform for products, philosophies, hobbies or interests, you may subscribe to other channels which then become part of your news feed organically. For those who want to there is the option to share (called: remind) comment, like, or dislike. each of these options as well as creating content or posting content, earn your account tokens that can then be used to boost content, or contribute to another channel, and ultimately for the driven participant can be exchanged for actual crypto-currency.
For our purpose the Waking Dog channel is a clearing house of diverse news sources, archiving the current events that pique our interest in the well trodden realm of our general mission- to explore issues of justice, peace, and human rights- along with the powers, personalities, and policies that effect them.
of course the danger of a free speech platform that touts the privacy of users is bound to draw in every element of humanity, with perhaps an extra dollop of radical ideas and outlandish views. this could be a more accurate view of humanity but it isn'tt for the faint of heart- anything goes, except outright criminal activity, threats, etc. and the moderation from the coders-in-chief is minimal, in fact there is now a random jury process to appeal decisions about controversial content, the few I was asked to participate in were about mislabeled porn.
Media is only as good as the people that make it.
What is Minds?
Minds.com is a social media networking site which would have to be characterized as the antithesis of Facebook. Minds basically took all the issues that people do not like about Facebook, both operationally and philosophically, and fixed them. Minds was only formally launched in June of 2015.
The network has gained significant traction from an extremely loyal subscriber base. Here is just one Minds user’s feelings about the site but it is the typical sentiment of many of their users, myself included: “I haven’t left Facebook, but only because it’s my only connection to much of my family. The truth is, Facebook is manipulated. The information you receive is censored, twisted, and aggressive. A person’s deep, intellectual thoughts on life are lost in the trends of the moment. Social media has the potential to be the digital nervous system of the entire human species. Social media can connect the entire planet and bring various cultural traditions and philosophies to a place where all can comprehend. I came to Minds.com looking for this concept, and have absolutely found it.” – @stoneman2103
What is Minds Philosophy?
From what I have observed using Minds over the last 6 months, it is the exact opposite of Facebook. Facebook looks to restrict, collect, exploit and commercialize the flow of information and Minds wants to set information free (except for their users’ information). Minds says its platform is about the liberation of information and access to knowledge and this is also reflected in their actions. Minds has outlined a more ethical revenue model that does not rely on exploiting their users or their content and information.
Minds wants to grow their company and enrich their users, compared to Facebook, which has enriched their company by exploiting their users. This is not to say that as the Minds platform grows, that they won’t run into some of the same challenges that Facebook faced, but in my opinion, the guys at Minds will have better solutions because they have a completely different set of ethics than Facebook.
